class summary

This course is designed to help teach the fundamental skills and techniques of landscape painting. Whether you are a beginner, or have some experience in painting, this class will provide a valuable fundamental understanding of the core concepts involved in creating a finished studio landscape painting. In this course students will learn how to create a finished landscape painting planning stage, all the way to the finished painting. This Is a great class for students who have taken my Oil Painting class and are interested in focusing on Landscape painting.

No prior experience is required! As we keep class sizes small, our instructors can cater to each student’s individual skill level.

MATERIALS

I will be going over materials on the first day, so you will not need to have everything on day 1.

Bring along a sketchbook for warm-ups! If you’re unsure about any of these we can answer any questions you may have about materials on the first day of class

I recommend that students use oil paint (especially if they have already taken my intro to oil class) but new students may bring acrylic paint instead if they choose to do so, as acrylic can be easier to use for beginners.

One 9x12 or larger Stretched Canvas or Prepared Board for final painting.
A 9x12 Frederix Canvas Pad (Make sure it’s Canvas, and not Canvas Paper)
Various Sized Brushes For Oil painting or Acrylic (good mix of synthetic and bristle brushes is recommended.)
Palette or Palette Paper
Pencil
Recommended Paint Colors: (Gamblin and Winsor Newton are good brands)

Titanium White
Raw Umber
Burnt Umber
Cadmium Red
Alizarin Crimson
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Yellow (Light or Cad Lemon)
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Ivory Black
+ Any Other Colors You Want to Bring
Drawing Board or Large Clipboard (very useful for transporting your artwork)

Palette Knife (For Mixing)
Odorless Mineral Spirit for Oil (Gamsol Is Best) Please no Turpentine!
Linseed Oil (optional)
Jar for Water if using Acrylic
Paper Towels or Rags
Box for Palette/Wet Painting

SYLLABUS

Here’s a rough outline of what we’ll be covering!

Week 1 Overview of materials, Introduction to painting with an open palette.

Week 2 Composition of Landscape Painting, Thumbnail, And Value Study

Week 3 Color Study

Week 4 Finishing color study and starting Final Painting (Underpainting)

Week 5 Finishing underpainting and adding color

Week 6 and 7 Finishing up the final painting!
