Interested in drawing but not sure where to start? This beginner course is designed to give you the tools you need to start drawing confidently.
We’ll begin the course by talking about observing shapes in a still life. Eventually, we’ll work our way towards being able to execute a portrait from a live model. By working with charcoal students will be able to focus on identifying shadow shapes as the basis of tonal drawing
MATERIALS
If you’re unsure about any of these we can answer any questions you may have about materials on the first day of class
Drawing paper pad size 18x24 (Strathmore 400 medium tooth recommended)
Drawing Board
Willow Charcoal (Not Vine Charcoal!)
General’s Charcoal Pencils (2B & 4B)
Kneaded Eraser
Plastic Eraser
White charcoal pencil (optional)
Bristle Brush (We will have these available for purchase and/or class use)
Syllabus
Week 1 “chaos to order," learning to observe abstractly
Week 2 Using angles to measure and expanding our value range
Week 3 Using edge variation to convey softness
Week 4 Hand toning paper and textures
Week 5 Drawing the skull
Week 6 Portrait drawing from the live model
Week 7 Portrait week 2
REFUNDS
Please contact us at least 1 week before class for a full refund. Unfortunately due to our limited class sizes we cannot process refunds after this time. Transfers to other classes are usually possible
It is possible that a class is cancelled if an inadequate number of students register. In this case, tuition will be promptly refunded
absences
Anyone who must miss classes may attend up to two make-up sessions in other classes as long as space permits
