class summary
This course is designed to introduce the beginning/intermediate artist to figurative drawing, with an emphasis on form and planar construction. We will progress from constructing simple geometric forms to drawing the portrait from the live model, covering techniques and materials along the way. Though this course is primarily structured with the beginning artist in mind, more experienced artists who wish to expand their understanding of form-based drawing are also welcome.
MATERIALS
Drawing Paper Pad, 18 x 24” (Strathmore 400 medium surface)
Drawing Board
Three 3B Graphite Drawing Pencils
Kneaded Eraser
Plastic Eraser
X-Acto Knife (for sharpening pencils and cutting erasers)
Sandpaper (220 grit) or Sandpaper Sharpening Block
Syllabus
Week 1- Introduction to materials- how to sharpen and hold a pencil, hatch and apply tone, and draw straight lines, curved lines, and ellipses
Week 2- Observing and constructing simple geometric forms (cubes, spheres, and cylinders)
Week 3- Applying value to a planar form (curved and flat surfaces)
Week 4- Planes of the head- instructor demonstration and long study
Week 5- Portrait from plaster cast- instructor demonstration and long study
Week 6- Portrait from the live model- quick studies from different angles
Week 7- Portrait from the live model- full session drawing

Please contact us at least 1 week before class for a full refund. Unfortunately due to our limited class sizes we cannot process refunds after this time. Transfers to other classes are usually possible
It is possible that a class is cancelled if an inadequate number of students register. In this case, tuition will be promptly refunded
absences
Anyone who must miss classes may attend up to two make-up sessions in other classes as long as space permits
